Re: wollemi survival in a cold European winter
by

Left on behalf of Matthew Frayne by Mark Taylor
After reading another entry about a Wollemi Pine making it through the cold winter I i would like to add, so had mine, albeit it had blanched to a paler green (as it did last winter too) although it is in a moderately exposed situation on blue liass limey clay soil and the temperature here went down to
-13 C this winter and for several nights on the trot last winter too.The tree enjoys ok-ish drainage (well down to the clay layer I suppose). It grew very well in it's first year and quite well two summers ago, but had a poor summer in all the grey, wet coolness of last summer and did not grow so explosively then and started very late after everything else in the garden - even the Ash Tree and my common Beech in a very cold spot (last tree to open in the valley usually).
It seems to be pest free and immune to the attentions of snails, unlike my Dawn Redwood (may it rest in peace) which was eaten out of existence by snails in one wet summer.
I've left it alone to get on with things except when a jobbing builder dropped a load of wood on top of it (he nearly lost his head for that until I uncovered it to find it totally unharmed - a tough little tree it certainly is).
I am very happy with my tree and look forward to it turning, in time, into the monster I hope it to be.
