Re: The Waiting is Over
by
Rosie Peddle
Hello from the Algarve, south east Portugal,
I have received my wollemi pine in good condition via UK delivery and hope to plant out soon as our climate is mediterranean. The early winter period is best for planting here to take advantage of the winter rainfall before the summer drought.
My query to this group is about soil types, I have calcareous clay and sand/gravel clay soils in different parts of the garden here, I am guessing that the slightly more acidic sandy soils would be best for the wollemi ?? augmented with some loam/peat ?? and that I should expect to provide summer irrigation for the first couple of years ??
Our temperatures vary between winter night time lows of 4C up to extreme summer highs of 40C - hope this gorgeous tree can cope ! We are roughly equivalent to Zone 10. Do you think I should grow it in a large pot and enjoy it on the terrace rather than hope for a large tree ?
Is anyone else growing this tree in a mediterranean climate ? Any and all helpful info gratefully received.
