This picture was taken about one month after the tree arrived in September 2006. It lived on the terrace catching the sun for the first month and then moved into the conservatory where it will stay over the winter.

Mark Taylor and Tony Russell will be at Westonbirt Arboretum on Saturday 21st October to answer questions and give information on the Wollemi Pine. This is an exclusive opportunity to come and choose a tree and take it home. You will be one of the first people in the country to join the conservation effort and own one of these amazing and facinating trees. The Wollemi Pine will not be available in Garden Centres until May 2007. So come and choose a tree on Saturday and steal a march on the nieghbours.

I thought it was nice to plant Auracaria angustifolia (in the foreground) with Wollemia. Looking at the leaves it is not surprising that botanists have decided that Wollemia is related to the Auracariaceae. After all they are all trees from the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana.

In future I will plant some more Araucaria species to accompany the Wollemias.

On the left in the picture is the Wollemia that arrived in September. It is 55 cm tall. I decided to plant it out, but I will give it some good winter protection.

Fortunately winters in the northern part of Gwynedd between the sea (which is 2,5 km away) and the Snowdonia mountains are fairly mild.

This is the Wollemia I received in September 2006. I have just planted it out. The soil is slightly acid. The bracken and the oak leafs which are around in abundance are turned into fertile soil. This young Wollemia was 55 cm tall when I planted it. It will need good protection from winter cold and also from local wild life (hares!) which tend to go for the juicy bark. Although I have fenced off the whole of the arboretum, there are occasionally marauding Welsh mountain sheep that manage to find a way in. They are a menace for young trees. That's why I fence off many of my most valuable young trees individually.

It is now 103 cm tall and it seems to be quite happy. To be sure that it will get through its first winter unscathed I will give it protection with fleece and hessian.

This tree was planted during the children's programme Blue Peter on 28th June 2006 by Chris Collins the Blue Peter gardener. It is probably the most famous tree in the UK as you can see it over the weather presenters shoulder on most mornings during Breakfast News on BBC 1. The tree looks in fine fetal and if you look closley you can see it is in good company with a Ginko tree planted just behind it.

I have my Wollemi in an unheated conservatory on the south side of our house. The bud opened the last week of March and now it is going full steam. It is wonderful; unlike any other conifer I have ever seen. It has strap leaves but they come out like needles from the bud.

Here is a photo of my Wollemi Pine being planted in an old walled garden in East Lothian last May. It has two eucalyptus trees as companions at the other end of the garden, so it should feel at home! It has grown a bit, and survived the winter so far.

Tortrix

We have found very little in the way of pests on the trees here on the nursery but Tortrix seems to have a particular penchant for Wollemi Pine. Consider using Tortrix Moth Trap; these use a pheromone to catch the male moth. Moths fly during the day, in early summer and again in early autumn. In a heated greenhouse or conservatory they may be active all year round. The trap should be suspended above the plants which are at risk. Check the trap frequently. As soon as one moth is caught, spray the plants with Bio Sprayday Greenfly Killer Plus or Liquid Derris Plus. Spray (Always follow the recommendations on the packaging) again every 2-3 weeks while moths continue to be caught. The easiest method of control is to pick off affected leaves and burn them.

Wollemia nobilis planted on 25.05.06. During 2006 it grew 38 cm and reached a height of 103 cm. It continued to thrive in 2007 putting on an additional 36 cm and now has reached 139 cm.Last year I covered it up for the winter, but have not done so this winter. We have had a number of frosty days and night frost down to -4 C, but apart from a few brown tips it looks amazingly resilient. Last year I could not resist it when the Wollemia went on sale locally at Seiont Nurseries in North Wales. I bought another one, so now there is a cluster of three Wollemi's in my arboretum and all of them are doing well. So far no sign of cones on the oldest specimen, but it is early days.
